This 'Big Three' automaker was spending large amounts of money on chemicals required to neutralize and treat alkaline bath water in the automotive manufacturing process. In addition to the cost of the chemicals, the treated wastewater was not being re-used in the factory thereby incurring further costs.
Alkaline baths are used to clean metals prior to the application of paints and coatings. The quality of the paint application is largely dependent upon the cleanliness of the material. Alkaline baths deteriorate in quality as they are used over the course of a few days or weeks. The consistency of paint and coating applications is improved by maintaining a constantly high quality of alkaline bath.
