Shipboard Water Treatment
Project Summary
Canadian Navy Shipboard Reverse Osmosis Desalinators (SROD's)
- Application: Shipboard Reverse Osmosis Desalinator (SROD)
- Year of Completion: 2002 to Present
- System Type: Drinking Water Desalination
The Problem
The Canadian Forces operate their Naval Frigates around the world under extreme and demanding conditions. Each frigate has a starboard and port desalination plant that produces drinking water and general-purpose water for the ship. The drinking water standards for the Canadian Navy are very high and it is essential that with deployments as far as the Persian Gulf, an adequate and reliable supply of high quality water is available.
The Frigates are periodically inspected and maintenance procedures are completed in Canadian dockyards in Halifax and Esquimault. The desalination plants are based on Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology and need to be extensively repaired and overhauled on a periodic basis. In addition, the Canadian Forces need suppliers with expertise in membrane technologies in order to get advice and assistance on making adjustments to their systems or due to special conditions that require modification of the equipment for specific missions.
The Seprotech Solution
The Canadian Forces are a repeat Seprotech customer. The company has supplied the Navy with equipment and services in the past as well as manufacturing Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems for the navy's submarines. Following an extensive and competitive bidding and evaluation process, Seprotech was selected to Repair and Overhaul (R&O) the entire Navy's SROD's on a three-year contract valued at over $6.5 million dollars in addition to completing repair and overhaul tasks in Seprotech's Ottawa factory.
Further to these tasks, company service representatives are required to travel extensively to advise and assist the Canadian Navy with matters relating to their desalination plants. Whether it is plant optimization or field repairs, Seprotech staff are on constant call to do their part in supporting Canadian Forces missions at home and abroad.
